In this uncertain time, in this shaky economy, you can always count on one sure thing: that Labrador Retrievers - *yawn* - will be the most popular dog in America. According to registration statistics at the American Kennel Club, the venerable breed tops the list for the 18th consecutive year.
Ribsy shook his head. Can't people be a bit more original? With all these wonderful, diverse breeds out there, couldn't they at least consider something else? If only they were more aware of other dog breeds. So many others are also friendly, gentle, and great with kids (some of the big reasons why people choose Labs).
But please! There's no need to get a whippet. At #63, Ribsy's quite satisfied with the ranking. That means it's popular enough that you can source a breeder. But rare enough so that the breed is not overbred and prone to exploitation. And unique enough that you feel special walking with one (or two, or three, or four, as whippet owners know that you can't stick to just one).
And who wants a common dog anyway? No offense to Labs, but Ribsy has to really concentrate and closely sniff all the Lab butts at the park to tell who's who. They all look the same. Point: 18 labs played Marley in the movie. It's practically impossible to find 18 whippets that look the same. Sorry, our breed just doesn't work that way. Whew.
So what else is out there? Girl has always had a soft spot for the striking Vizsla (Hungarian pointer), which ranks in at a cool Obama-presidential #44. Her other favorites include the German Shorthaired Pointer (#16), Basenji (#85), and the Saluki (#118). If she really wanted to stand out from the crowd, she supposes she could get a Harrier or a Glen of Imaal Terrier, which rank at the bottom of the list.
But really, folks, who cares about popularity? It doesn't indicate what makes a dog beautiful or wonderful. It doesn't mean that Labs are the best dog out there. And what about mutts? They don't even factor in these rankings. The bottom line is that every dog out there has the potential to be your best friend.
That's right, thought Ribsy, as he nuzzled closer to the pillow that is Girl's lap.
